Orsted and Eversource Take Final Investment Decision on Revolution Wind

Providence, R.I., October 31, 2023 – Joint venture partners Ørsted and Eversource have taken final investment decision (FID) on Revolution Wind, Rhode Island and Connecticut's first utility-scale offshore wind farm. This FID results in the joint venture’s official commencement of the full scope of construction of the 704-megawatt offshore wind project.

Revolution Wind will create thousands of direct, indirect, and induced jobs, as well as permanent operations and maintenance jobs across both states. Once complete, the 704-megawatt Revolution Wind will deliver 400 megawatts of clean, affordable offshore wind power to Rhode Island and 304 megawatts of the same to Connecticut, powering more than 350,000 homes across the two states and helping the states reach their ambitious climate goals.

“Revolution Wind is key to Rhode Island and Connecticut’s clean energy future and the growth of the region’s blue economy,” said David Hardy, Group EVP and CEO Americas at Ørsted. “With our final investment decision, we’re solidifying our commitment to building this second offshore wind farm for Rhode Island, and the first offshore wind project for Connecticut. We’re already making major investments in local union jobs and port infrastructure to support this project, and that effort will expand in the coming months.”

“With this joint final investment decision, we are ready for the start of the full scope of construction for Revolution Wind,” said Joe Nolan Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Eversource Energy. “We’re ramping up onshore construction of the transmission system of this critical clean energy project, which will deliver enough renewable energy to power more than 350,000 homes in both Rhode Island and Connecticut. We’re proud to be part of the Revolution Wind partnership and to deliver clean renewable energy to meet the commitments for each state’s respective energy goals.”

Revolution Wind received its Record of Decision in August from the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), paving the way for the project to begin onshore construction. Revolution Wind expects to receive approval from BOEM on its construction and operations plan in November, the final approval required in the agency’s review of the project. The project is expected to be operational in 2025.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Joe Courtney applauded the new $19 million Department of Defense contract awarded to ThayerMahan of Groton, Connecticut to sustain the Navy’s and Marine Corps’ undersea and maritime advantage. The contract will allow ThayerMahan to continue developing autonomous maritime sensing technology.

“This federal contract will help strengthen the Navy’s and Marine Corp’s eyes and ears undersea through advanced and innovative autonomous maritime systems, which will be a critical capability in the 21st century. There’s no question that ThayerMahan is a leader in this work, which is why my office and I have long advocated for this Groton-based company to receive federal contracts like this. Congratulations to ThayerMahan and your skilled employees who are leading the design, engineering, and operation of this critical technology,” said Rep. Joe Courtney, Ranking Member of the House Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee.

“We appreciate the continued support and confidence of the Office of Naval Research as we help generate much needed undersea sensing capacity to sustain our undersea advantage. USS Groton Monument Fundraising Campaign

For more than 100 years Groton has been the Submarine Capital of the World. Here on the banks of the Thames River, hundreds of submarines have been built by the men and women of Electric Boat, the nation’s first submarine base was established, and hundreds of thousands of submariners have been trained at Sub School. Yet no lasting monument exists to recognize the men and women who build, design, suppliers, support, operate and maintain the United States Navy’s submarines.

The USS Groton Sail Foundation is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt nonprofit organization focused on building a lasting public monument to celebrate our region’s contribution to our nation’s defense. The centerpiece of the monument will be the USS Groton’s sail and rudder, which will serve as a permanent tribute to the Navy’s submarine community, past, present and future.

Dedicated to the men and women who design, build, operate, and maintain submarines and the families and communities who support them.

USS Groton Monument

The monument will be located right outside the Groton Public Library. Kent + Frost Landscape Architects have designed an environmentally conscious earthen berm in the true size and shape of a submarine. Its centerpiece will be the USS Groton’s sail and rudder. The monument will feature a design plaza, family garden, community connection walk, and an underway plaza with a memorial walkway and historical storyboards. This monument will provide a place for celebration, an educational backdrop to the evolution of the submarine industry and submarine service.

The USS Groton Sail Foundation is now raising $2 million to build the monument. The foundation has raised close to $500,000 in funding from grants, donations and corporate support and is engaging people throughout our nation to participate in this important endeavor. To learn more about the monument or to purchase a paver, a memorial tree or simply make a donation please visit www.GrotonSail.com
