Meet CCAT's New Chief Technology Officer - Dr. Jacquelynn Garofano

We are proud to announce Dr. Jacquelynn (Jackie) Garofano has joined the CCAT team in the position of Chief Technology Officer. A press release went out to the media today.
Jackie joins us after a nearly decade-long career at Raytheon Technologies and two decades of materials research experience.
“I am thrilled to join Ron and the team at CCAT. It’s an honor to have the opportunity to play an integral role in developing the company’s technical vision, strategic direction and future growth," says Jackie. 
As CTO, Jackie will focus on developing and directing new technology projects and programs in collaboration with our partner organizations: federal agencies, national labs and consortiums, universities, global industrial corporations and subject matter experts.  
Jackie began her career as a research scientist at United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) in 2011. Leveraging her materials engineering expertise, she solved technical challenges, provided failure investigation, and developed innovative technologies for the company’s aerospace and building industries. At UTRC, she was a driving force behind utilization of combinatorial high throughput methodology to rapidly execute and assess multivariable design of experiments, focusing on materials informatics approaches, for advanced materials development (including additive manufacturing) and corrosion mitigation. She has 11 technical publications to her credit, including the Applied Physics Letters, the Journal of Materials Science, the Journal of the American Ceramic Society, and Additive Manufacturing, and holds two U.S. patents.

We're excited to have Jackie on the CCAT team! Her broad technical expertise, and her deep understanding of partner organizations, will be an asset to our partnerships, programs and workshops.

National Offshore Wind R&D Consortium Announces Projects Totaling $8 Million

The National Offshore Wind Research and Development Consortium, which was established with funding from U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), has selected 15 new projects to receive a total of $8 million for offshore wind support structure innovation, U.S.-based supply chain development, electrical systems innovation, and solutions for impacts on wildlife and radar.

DOE established the National Offshore Wind R&D Consortium in 2018 to address research priorities for offshore wind as defined in the National Offshore Wind Strategy, which was developed jointly by DOE and the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. DOE competitively selected the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to administer the Consortium, with DOE and NYSERDA each providing $20.5 million to fund high-impact research projects that lower the costs of U.S. offshore wind. State agencies in Maryland, Virginia, Massachusetts, and Maine have since joined, resulting in a total investment of around $47 million. The Consortium’s members include many of the major entities in the offshore wind industry.

The selections announced today include:

  • Four projects to develop innovative support structures (including foundations and moorings) for very large fixed-bottom and floating offshore wind turbines to achieve economies of scale
  • Three projects that propose innovative solutions to supply chain and installation challenges including spiral welded towers, a self-positioning blade installation tool, and unmanned aerial devices for inspections
  • Five projects to support innovations in grid interconnection and transmission
  • Three technology development projects to mitigate use conflicts, including wildlife monitoring and radar interference.

The full list of new projects and the technical challenge areas they aim to address is below. The 15 new projects bring the Consortium’s total funding portfolio to $28 million for 40 projects.

Munger Construction Honored in Varco Pruden Hall of Fame Competition

Two Category Awards: Building Retrofit and Warehousing

March 18, 2021 – Branford, CT; – Pat Munger Construction Company, Inc has been named to Varco Pruden’s 2021 Hall of Fame for its American Polyfilm project, rated Best in the Warehousing Category, and for The Lee Company Building 2 project, rated Winner in the Retrofit Category.

The highly competitive Hall of Fame Awards are presented annually to the independent authorized VP Builders whose work reflects innovation and excellence using Varco Pruden building systems by creating exceptional architectural appearance, efficient design, and effective end use. “The Hall of Fame is proof positive that our builders continue to challenge the boundaries by seeking new and innovative ways to prove that Metal Building Systems are the system of choice,” said Paul Day, Varco Pruden president.

A VP pre-engineered steel building designed by Terry Architecture provides American Polyfilm, a Branford, CT manufacturer, with a new 27,400 SF facility, most of which is dedicated to warehousing but also provides office space, a two-story lean-to mezzanine and a separate structure to house the entire site’s utilities.  Munger completed construction in December 2020.  The building features panel rib walls, continuous beam framing, single slope galvalume roof and below eave canopies above the overhead doors.

The Lee Company, a Westbrook, CT manufacturer hired Munger to renew Building 2 into a 26,000 SF meeting and training center.  The retrofit, designed by architect Tom Gribbon, was completed in August 2020.  The original manufacturing facility was leveled to its main frames and its secondary framing roof purlins and wall girts were replaced.  The renovated facility features ThermalClad™ wall panels that offer superior thermal performance with an attractive profile along with a single slope galvalume roof.  Large moveable partitions enable space flexibility for training, meetings, catering and dining. A high-performance audio/visual system enhances the environment.

O&G Industries Leads $54.6M I-84 Safety, Operational Improvement Job

The Connecticut Department of Transportation's (CTDOT) $54.6 million I-84 Safety and Operational Improvements project in West Hartford, awarded to O&G Industries Inc., is based upon the mitigation of traffic congestion and safety concerns that can arise in heavy traffic situations.

This two-stage project, financed by the state and designed by BL Companies, started in March 2020 and should be completed in summer 2023. Additional parties involved in the project include Urban Engineers Inc., hired as the construction engineering and inspection consultant.

The project runs west and east along I-84. From the west, it begins at the Farmington/West Hartford town line and ends at the Park Road on-ramp and from the east and 500 ft. east of the Ridgewood Road overpass and extends 200 ft. east of the Mayflower overpass.

Ghazi Alsaqri, CTDOT's project engineer, addressed the initiative's benefits and positive impacts.

"The existing traffic volume within the project limits is at or near capacity, and combined with closely spaced interchanges, results in congestion and weaving concerns on this section," he said. "A review of the three-year crash data between 2012 and 2014 revealed a total of 159 crashes with 48 injuries and one fatality on I-84 WB, and a total of 202 crashes with 90 injuries and one fatality on I-84 EB. The crashes seen most prominently in this time period — rear endings, sideswiping, fixed-object crashes — are indicative of issues related to congestion and vehicle weaving maneuvers.

"The region has grown and with that, the foundations built previously are no longer feasible for the increased volume," he added. "I-84 was constructed in the early 1960s to support regional mobility and commerce; and as the region has grown over the past 60 years, so has daily traffic. Upon its completion, the sections being improved will achieve project goals of increased commuter safety, local and regional commerce and freight mobility."

An additional lane is being added on I-84 WB between Exits 39A and 43, which extends 9,500 ft. Additionally, for the I-84 EB direction, a lane will be added between Exit 40 and 41, which extends 2,800 ft. The lane additions in both directions are feasible via the replacement of the Berkshire Road bridges to accommodate them.   Read More>>>


ThayerMahan-UConn Team Begins High-Resolution Seabed Surveys of Thames River

ThayerMahan, Inc., a world leader in autonomous maritime security solutions, completed an underwater survey using its SeaScout system to capture high-quality hydrographic imagery of Connecticut's Thames River.  The survey is being conducted under a National Institute for Undersea Vehicle Technology (NIUVT) project in conjunction with the University of Connecticut (UConn)'s Department of Marine Sciences.

ThayerMahan's SeaScout system is an actively stabilized towed vehicle with synthetic aperture sonar and multibeam echosounder payloads. The system generates ultra-fine resolution (3cm x 3cm) beamformed imagery and interferometric bathymetry of undersea cables, boulders, rocks, and seafloor characteristics in real-time. For example, individual anchor chain links are visible and discernable in the image shown below:

The two-year project will locate and monitor the shifting boundaries of key biological habitats and short-term, small-scale changes in bathymetry important to the health of the Thames River and Long Island Sound ecosystems. Baseline data will be re-evaluated to identify changes in the region and enhance security within the New London port area.
